Communications session st

21 May 2024 / 8:00 am 5:00 pm

On May 21, 2024, the ASEM Law Department, part of the Faculty of General Economics and Law, in partnership with the ASEM Business Law Clinic, organized the student scientific communications session titled "The Impact of Crises on Criminality." The event, now in its sixth edition, is traditionally held as part of the Criminology course taught by Dr. Alexandra Tighineanu, Associate Professor of Law.

The session was divided into two sections and featured second-year Law students.

In the first part of the event, Liubovi JIGNEA-SUVEICĂ, Justice Commissioner and Deputy Director of the National Penitentiary Administration under the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Moldova, delivered a detailed and well-argued presentation. During her speech, she addressed students on topics such as the causes of juvenile delinquency, challenges faced by the penitentiary system in reintegrating young offenders into society, and the National Penitentiary Administration's plans to improve and enhance the penal execution system in Moldova. The discussion was engaging and constructive, capturing the students’ genuine interest in the issues raised.

In the second section, registered students presented their research on current topics, including factors influencing the relationship between crises and crime in Moldova, female criminality during crises, criminological aspects of money laundering, and the impact of the war in Ukraine on crime in the region.

As part of the Criminology course, students traditionally read Fyodor Dostoevsky's novel "Crime and Punishment". The session concluded with debates on the criminological characteristics of the crime described in the novel.

Events like this provide students with the opportunity to reflect on real-world issues in the field, engage in debates, argue their positions, develop logical and analytical thinking, and propose solutions and recommendations.
